Deepinder Goyal: The Entrepreneur Who Changed the Way India Eats

Date:

Deepinder Goyal is one of India’s most influential technology entrepreneurs and the founder of Zomato, the company that transformed from a simple restaurant-discovery platform into one of the country’s largest consumer internet businesses.

His entrepreneurial journey is a story of spotting an everyday problem, taking a calculated risk and repeatedly reinventing a business to survive some of India’s toughest startup challenges.

From IIT Delhi to Bain & Company

Deepinder Goyal studied Mathematics and Computing at IIT Delhi, graduating with an Integrated M.Tech in 2005. After college, he joined management consulting firm Bain & Company.

It was actually during his time at Bain that the idea that would eventually become Zomato began taking shape.

Goyal noticed that employees often struggled to find restaurant menus. He and his colleague Pankaj Chaddah created an internal portal where employees could access cafeteria menus.

What began as a small workplace solution revealed a much bigger opportunity.

The Beginning of Foodiebay

In 2008, Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah launched Foodiebay, initially as a platform for restaurant discovery and menu information. The founders started by collecting and scanning restaurant menus in Delhi-NCR and putting them online.

The concept was simple: instead of calling restaurants or searching through scattered information, people could use one platform to discover restaurants and understand what they offered.

Foodiebay was later renamed Zomato in 2010.

Leaving the Corporate World

The biggest decision came when Goyal and Chaddah decided to leave their jobs and focus entirely on the startup.

Leaving a stable consulting career to build an uncertain internet business was a significant risk.

But Goyal believed that the growing internet ecosystem in India could support businesses built around consumer discovery and convenience.

That decision became the foundation of his entrepreneurial career.

From Restaurant Discovery to Food Delivery

For years, Zomato was primarily associated with restaurant discovery, menus, reviews and recommendations.

But Goyal understood that simply helping customers discover restaurants might not be enough to build a much larger business.

The company gradually expanded its services and eventually entered food delivery in India in 2015.

This was a critical turning point.

Zomato was no longer just telling consumers where to eat—it was becoming part of the transaction itself.

Surviving the Tough Years

Zomato’s journey was far from smooth.

The company had to deal with funding pressures, intense competition, operational complexity and the challenge of convincing restaurants and consumers to trust a relatively new digital platform.

There were also difficult periods for the broader startup ecosystem.

Then came the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely disrupted the restaurant industry.

Yet the company continued adapting.

Goyal’s willingness to change direction became one of the defining characteristics of his leadership.

The IPO Milestone

One of the biggest moments in Goyal’s journey came in 2021, when Zomato went public.

The IPO was valued at approximately US$7.6 billion, marking a landmark moment for India’s startup ecosystem.

A company that had started by digitising restaurant menus had become a publicly listed technology business.

The listing also demonstrated how far India’s consumer internet ecosystem had evolved.

The Bold Bet on Blinkit

Goyal’s next major strategic move was arguably even more controversial.

Zomato acquired quick-commerce company Blinkit, betting heavily on the future of ultra-fast delivery.

The decision initially faced skepticism from some investors, but Blinkit eventually became one of the most important businesses within the larger group.

This demonstrated Goyal’s willingness to invest aggressively in markets that he believed could become strategically important—even when the immediate reaction was uncertain.

From Zomato to Eternal

In 2025, Zomato’s parent company announced a major transformation.

The company adopted the name Eternal, with Zomato becoming one of four major businesses alongside Blinkit, District and Hyperpure. Goyal described the change as more than a simple rebranding—it was intended to represent the company’s broader mission and future.

The transformation reflected how dramatically the original business had evolved.

What started as restaurant discovery had become a broader ecosystem covering food delivery, quick commerce, events and restaurant supply.

Stepping Away From the CEO Role

In January 2026, Goyal stepped down as CEO of Eternal and handed the role to Albinder Dhindsa, the former head of Blinkit. Goyal remained involved with the company as Vice Chairman while shifting more of his attention toward higher-risk experimentation and new ventures.

For Goyal, this represented a change in role rather than a departure from entrepreneurship.

His focus increasingly moved toward building and exploring new technologies.

A New Chapter in Deep Tech

Goyal’s post-CEO ventures have moved well beyond food delivery.

He has been involved in LAT Aerospace, which is working on ambitious aviation technology, and Temple, an experimental wearable technology project.

The Temple project has attracted considerable attention in 2026. Goyal recently revealed a significantly smaller version of the wearable and said pre-orders would begin soon.

This new phase reveals another side of his entrepreneurial personality: the willingness to move from a proven business into difficult, uncertain technology problems.

What Makes Deepinder Goyal Different?

Goyal’s career is not simply about building Zomato.

His biggest strength has arguably been his willingness to change the business before the market forces him to.

Restaurant discovery became food delivery.

Food delivery became a larger food ecosystem.

Zomato became part of Eternal.

And now, Goyal is exploring areas such as aviation, wearables and deep technology.

That willingness to experiment has been central to his career.

Lessons From His Journey

Deepinder Goyal’s story offers several lessons for entrepreneurs.

Start with a real problem. Zomato began with something as ordinary as finding restaurant menus.

Be willing to reinvent. The original Zomato was very different from the company that eventually became Eternal.

Take calculated risks. The Blinkit acquisition demonstrated Goyal’s willingness to make large bets on emerging markets.

Think long term. Building a major consumer technology company requires surviving years of uncertainty rather than chasing instant success.

And perhaps most importantly, don’t become too attached to the first version of your idea.

The Road Ahead

Deepinder Goyal’s entrepreneurial journey has now entered a new chapter.

After helping create one of India’s most recognizable technology companies, he is turning his attention toward problems that are potentially much harder to solve.

Food delivery showed what technology could do for everyday convenience. His new ventures suggest that his ambitions now extend into deeper areas of technology and infrastructure.

From scanning restaurant menus at Bain to building Zomato, expanding into Blinkit and eventually creating the broader Eternal ecosystem, Goyal’s story is a powerful example of Indian entrepreneurship.

He didn’t simply build a food-delivery company. He built, reinvented and repeatedly expanded an idea—and then chose to start exploring what could come next.
