“A book’s journey does not end at publication; its true success lies in reaching the right readers and building a lasting readership.”
Sagar Azad is the Founder of Anecdote Publishing House, an independent publishing company dedicated to connecting quality readers with quality writers across India and beyond. Established with the vision of making quality literature more accessible, Anecdote discovers, publishes, and champions books across multiple genres, introducing both emerging and established voices to a wider readership.
The publishing house is committed not only to publishing books but also to building lasting readership through nationwide bookstore distribution and sustained literary engagement.
Under Sagar’s leadership, Anecdote Publishing House has published more than 150 authors, establishing itself as a trusted home for quality literature and a publisher committed to bringing meaningful stories to readers.
Sagar says,
“Our mission is to help every deserving writer find the right platform while ensuring every meaningful story reaches the readers it deserves.”

The Inspiration
Sagar Azad’s journey as a publisher began with an experience early in his career while working at a bookstore in Kota in 2011. As a Customer Support Associate, he recommended fiction titles based on readers’ interests. During this time, he noticed that while readers readily chose international authors, many equally compelling books by Indian writers remained undiscovered on the shelves. Witnessing deserving voices struggle to find their readership inspired him to establish a publishing house dedicated to connecting quality readers with quality writers.
Sagar further reveals,
“When I became the manager of the store, I started organising mega book launch events with crowds of 2,000 to 3,000 people. We organised launch events for some of India’s most reputed authors, including Durjoy Datta, Amish Tripathi, Ravinder Singh, Arya Babbar, Sudeep Nagarkar and others, helping readers discover and embrace Indian writing.”
Around the same time, he began receiving messages from aspiring writers who were unable to find publishers willing to take a chance on them. Realising that many talented voices simply lacked the opportunity to be discovered, he founded Anecdote Publishing House with the mission of discovering, nurturing, and publishing exceptional new voices and ensuring they receive a wider readership.
The USP
What sets Anecdote Publishing House apart is its editorial commitment to discovering exceptional new voices and introducing them to a wider readership. Sagar founded the publishing house on the belief that talented writers should not be overlooked simply because they are publishing their first book.
Looking back at their journey, he says,
“Since then, we have been committed to discovering promising voices, publishing books of lasting value, and building meaningful readership for our authors through both strong distribution and sustained literary engagement in literary festivals, book fairs, author conversations, and other literary platforms. Today, I am proud that Anecdote Publishing House has built a distinct identity by supporting authors throughout their journey, not just publishing their books, and that our work has now reached international markets as well.”
Anecdote Publishing House also distinguishes itself through its editorial standards and long-term commitment to its authors. Every title is selected with care and published with the belief that meaningful books deserve both editorial excellence and sustained engagement with readers.
Speaking of competition in the market, he adds,
“I think there is no field in this world without competition, and competition is the beauty of every industry. It pushes you to improve and bring out your very best. Publishing is no different. There are many publishers, each trying to build their own place in the market. But I have always believed that once you become deeply focused on your purpose, you stop worrying about competitors and start focusing on creating value.”
Above all, Sagar believes in building enduring relationships with authors. Anecdote Publishing House works closely with its authors, championing their work beyond publication and helping their books find a lasting readership. This long-term commitment has earned the publishing house a reputation for bringing meaningful literature to the readers it is meant to reach.

The Rocky Road
Sagar’s journey began with limited resources. He acknowledges that building Anecdote Publishing House required overcoming challenges such as securing funding, assembling the right team, and establishing credibility in a highly competitive publishing industry.
As the publishing house grew, these operational challenges gradually became easier to manage, allowing it to expand its catalogue, reach a wider readership, and publish an increasing number of emerging voices.
Today, he believes the industry’s greatest challenge is preserving authentic storytelling in the age of artificial intelligence. For this reason, Anecdote Publishing House remains committed to publishing works rooted in genuine human creativity, believing that technology can assist the publishing process but can never replace the originality, emotion, and lived experience that give literature its enduring value.
He asserts,
“Technology can certainly assist the publishing process, but we believe creativity begins with the human mind. We do not encourage authors to use AI to write their books because no technology can truly replicate human emotions, lived experiences, or authentic storytelling. Our commitment has always been to quality literature, and preserving that authenticity will continue to be one of our greatest responsibilities.”
Celebrating Wins
One of Sagar’s greatest achievements has been discovering and publishing more than 150 authors, helping bring their books to readers through bookstores across India.
As Anecdote Publishing House has grown, it has also begun attracting writers from around the world, reflecting the trust it has earned within the literary community.
His work in the industry has also received several recognitions. In 2026, Sagar was honoured with the Atal Samman Award as the Visionary Literary Changemaker and Youth Reading Culture Leader of the Year, and the previous year he was recognised among the 35 Great Entrepreneurs of India Under 35.
The Road Ahead
Sagar’s long-term vision is to build a publishing house known for books that inspire, encourage meaningful action, spread positivity, and preserve culture. Having experienced firsthand how reading shaped his own journey, he believes the right book can influence the way people think and, in turn, the direction their lives take.
Looking ahead, Sagar wants Anecdote Publishing House to continue connecting quality readers with quality writers while publishing stories that foster courage, kindness, inclusivity, and respect across gender, caste, religion, and age. His larger ambition is to champion literature that leaves a lasting social impact, helping create a generation that reads better, thinks better, and ultimately lives better.
Reflecting on the plans, he further highlights,
“Our biggest mission over the next 24 months is to make our books available in international bookstores and expand our presence globally. The vision is to help readers discover quality literature across multiple reading platforms while enabling our authors to reach readers across the world. It will certainly be challenging, but I am confident that we will achieve it.”
Lessons of Lifetime
Throughout his journey, Sagar has learned that every enduring institution begins with a clear sense of purpose. He believes that understanding why you started provides direction during difficult times and the conviction to persevere when challenges arise. That belief continues to guide Anecdote Publishing House in its commitment to discovering meaningful books and bringing them to the readers they are meant to reach.
While he is hesitant to position himself as someone who gives advice, Sagar leaves one piece of advice for budding entrepreneurs. He emphasises,
“Trust yourself, study your industry deeply, embrace new technology wisely, and never stop learning. Most importantly, keep helping others grow along the way. Businesses become truly successful when they create value not only for themselves but also for the communities they serve. I genuinely believe that nothing is impossible when your work is driven by purpose, perseverance, and a sincere desire to make a positive difference.”
